Weekly Wrap: A Super, Flashy Affair

People will probably never forget the Super Bowl XLIX media day. You know, the one where the Seattle Seahawks’ Marshawn Lynch claimed he was only there so he “wouldn’t get fined.” Clearly, not every NFL player has been properly trained to deal with the media, and sports journalists have hosted their fair share of challenging interviews. It seems that each year, a different kind of media buzz surrounds the big game. In this week’s Wrap, we’re analyzing some of the top stories leading up to the big day. Take a look.

The personalities of the Seattle Seahawks players may have presented a challenge to the media, but this year, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has brought the flash. He hit it big earlier this week, after sporting an $850 pair of zebra-striped, gold-swirl Versace pants on the team flight to San Francisco. In the midst of men’s fashion week, various sports personalities debated whether or not they could pull off the look. Jets wide receiver Eric Decker doesn’t seem to think he can – though he tipped his cap to Newton for the super fashion statement.

Washington Times

The retirement questions surrounding Peyton Manning have captivated sports fans everywhere. Will this be Manning’s last hurrah? The future Hall of Famer has alluded to retirement, but isn’t focused on anything past this Sunday. Certainly a second Super Bowl victory would be a good way for Manning to go out. Endless speculation has surrounded the retirement topic as game day draws nearer. Luckily, when it comes time to make a decision, Manning will have the guidance of John Elway, the last Broncos quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

Forget the specific players in the game Sunday. Super Bowl 50 will go in the books as one of the most expensive tickets in U.S. sporting history. As of Friday morning, tickets have sold for an average price of just over $4,800, almost $200 more than the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, which currently sits atop the list. Still want to go to the game? You’ll need to pay $2,950 for a seat in the upper deck.

Will the big game live up to the media frenzy and high ticket prices? Let us know in the comments section below.
