His suggestion to change that perception: “weeding-out the hapless and disingenuous [and providing] creative, credible interactive content.” He suggests quality over contrivance as the prescription for repairing relationships between the PR industry and a cynical public.

The complex mathematical models that give information its legitimacy can also be what prevent it from being used effectively. The esoteric data Davenport wants to make more palatable for public consumption is analogous to the products and services of a company. Unless a company takes it upon itself to forge a connection with consumers by providing relevant and honest content, viable and valuable products and services may be left unrendered.

Oxford Dictionaries has added new lexicon after they “have gathered enough independent evidence…to be confident that [new words] have widespread currency in English.” These new words range from shorthand acronyms, to fashion signifiers, to hipster comestibles. Although they might not convey the high-minded, data-derived concepts Tom Davenport is concerned with, understanding them is nonetheless important.
